Orthopedics

Orthopedics is a branch of medicine focused on the muscular and skeletal systems. The musculoskeletal system includes: bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves.

Orthopedic physiotherapy is the most common area associated with this profession as it encompasses sports injuries, joint wear and tear and common mobility maladies as well as minor and major trauma, post surgical conditions and congenital disorders. Orthopedic trauma from car accidents, falls, sporting accidents and arthritic changes are common reasons for referral. They help young children with bone and muscle growth abnormalities, as well as children with broken bones and muscle aches. They help people with workplace injuries such as neck strain and carpal tunnel syndrome as well as people with multiple muscle, ligament, and bone injuries due to car accidents and falls.

The common orthopedic disorders requiring physiotherapy are:

  • Intervertebral disc prolapse
  • Post fracture or Joint replacement rehabilitation
  • Cervical or Lumbar Spondylosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Fascitis
  • Ligamental injuries
  • Claudication pain, etc.

Whatever the pathology, orthopedic injuries require expertise to advise the client on mobility issues; appropriate and specific exercise is required to strengthen, lengthen, and stabilize affected muscle.

Physiotherapy Treatment include:

  • Electrotherapy, such as TENS, Ultra Sound or Acupuncture
  • Therapeutic programs generally include strengthening/stretching exercise, functional training for walking or activities of daily living
  • Pool therapy
  • Hot/cold packs
  • Neuromuscular reeducation
  • Manual therapy for joint mobilization, balance retraining and aerobic reconditioning.
